Election Journal is a fascinating look at what can be done to keep elections honest.

As I write, primary elections are going on in the state of Indiana in the USA (it's around 8.15 am in most parts of the state, and the polls opened at 6am). Already Election Journal has posted about several potential problems, including polling stations opening early, some polling stations not opening at all, and a team of on-the-ground reporters have been able to scotch a report that voters at one polling place only had ballots for the Democratic primary available to them.

I'm getting live updates from the primary on my mobile phone via Election Journal's twitter account, and they have also set up a live Google Map which shows where their reports are coming from, including the locations of polling booths with reported problems.


There are all sorts of ways that modern web services can be used to get important information out quickly. Election Journal is pointing the way.
