Thos who wonder why the US economy is tanking should perhaps read this.
First par:"
"The real cost of Iraq
A new book by Joseph Stiglitz, the Nobel-prize winning economist and former chief economist of the World Bank, makes a persuasive case that the credit crisis and US economic downturn is, at heart, a result of the Iraq war.
Stiglitz, and co-author Linda Bilmes, have estimated the cost of the war at $3 trillion – more than 50 times the original estimate.
Combine the effects of the war and the domestic antics of the Kleptocratic Bush regime and you have a recipe for economic meltdown in the US itself."..................................
Well at least this confirms the lessons of history.
Raises some questions:
- Will the Iraqis continue to let themselves be dominated by a vastly weakened superpower?
- Will the South Americans be encouraged in their now open insurrection by this event?
- Will the US ruling class (be forced to) resort to more open force to keep control in the US itself?
It seems that the post on Fascism in the US may have been a touch prescient, even if you don't entirely agree with some of its points. Even with an "enlightened" middle class.
